How to compare salary offers in different countries

Relocation planning · Updated 10 August 2026 · Global Tax Calculator editorial team

A larger salary does not automatically mean a better financial outcome. International offers should be compared through a consistent process that accounts for estimated net pay, benefits, location, and the rules that apply to you.

Make the salary inputs comparable

First, confirm whether each offer is annual or monthly and whether it includes variable compensation. Then calculate a planning estimate using the correct country and, where available, the appropriate region. Keep the income period consistent across offers.

Currency conversion is helpful for comparison, but it should not be the only decision factor. A converted salary does not tell you what rent, transport, healthcare, education, or food will cost in the new location.

Compare net income, not just gross income

Use the same gross salary period for each country and record the estimated income tax, regional tax, employee contribution, annual net amount, and monthly net amount. This makes the tax effect visible instead of hiding it inside one final number.

A simplified estimate is especially useful when you are comparing countries with different types of mandatory employee contributions. It remains an estimate because a real payroll calculation may depend on tax residency, household circumstances, credits, allowances, and employer-specific benefits.

Put benefits beside the cash salary

Some offers include health cover, pension contributions, paid leave, relocation support, meal allowances, transport, or housing. Others expect the employee to fund more of these costs personally. Ask whether a benefit is employer-paid, employee-paid through payroll, taxable, or available only after a probation period.

Check the first-year position

Relocation can create one-off costs such as deposits, visas, flights, temporary accommodation, and moving household items. Tax residence can also change during a year. Do not assume a standard resident calculation applies if you are arriving or leaving mid-year; verify that scenario with the relevant authority or a qualified adviser.

Simple decision sheet: list gross annual salary, estimated net monthly pay, guaranteed benefits, one-off relocation costs, and major monthly expenses. Use notes for assumptions that need confirmation.
